MickaCoo Pigeon and Dove Rescue

A part of Mickaboo, a non-profit bird rescue, just for these little understood birds. There are 500 pigeons and doves in only about 20 aviaries that need homes.

You don't even have to adopt to help these birds out, just spreading the word about what you learn from this blog and the amazing Elizabeth's blog http://www.rescuereport.org/, that domestic pigeons and doves need good homes too, just like cats, dogs, and parrots.

To continue providing avian vet care, foster homes and adoption services to a constant caseload of more than 100 rescued pigeons and doves, MickaCoo will need to raise about $6,000 per month in donations or grants. MickaCoo prioritizes taking in the most injured, ill or at risk birds in the Bay Area and while much of the care that we provide is donated by volunteers, we also need funding to pay vet bills and expenses.

We are trying lots of ways to raise funds and one way is through Garage Sales. Volunteers can help support MickaCoo by hosting a Garage Sale and donating the proceeds to MickaCoo.

Thanks to the hard work and hosting provided by Cheryl and donations of items to sell from many supporters, we had our very successful first sale on April 7th. We raised $1066!

It was such a success, that Cheryl (amazingly!) offered to have a second one before the first one was even over. We’re collecting donations and seeking volunteer help for MickaCoo Garage Sale #2 on 5/12.

Please read the full entry at The Rescue Report.

Pigeons are intelligent, brilliantly evolved birds. They suffer from popular misconceptions that they are “rats with wings” when they are actually very clean and beautiful animals.

Reblogging with links to the rest of the documentary.

Interesting informative documentary about pigeons and doves, pigeons are in the dove family by the way, not to have them confused as the same species.

I especially don’t condone the racing or breeding of them. Imagine being dropped off miles and miles away from home and have your parent say “Good luck!” and drive away.

And when he explains about how the birds can’t even see past their feathers just proves my point about how cruel fancy pigeons can be.

Odd Little Bird: While I was out at Swan Falls I ran in to this little guy. When I was taking pictures from its side I thought it was sitting on some lose feathers but then I came around the front and saw that it actually had feathered feet. Struck me as odd. A friend told me that she believes it is a ‘fancy’ pigeon.

Yes, most likely the result of a wild bird having bred with a fancy pigeon breed, or even an escaped pet, far too common.

Right now, Bay Area pigeons are in a crisis. MickaCoo is FULL and is having to turn birds away. Bay Area shelters are also filling up and need to place domestic, unreleasable pigeons that have timed out.

This crisis will be resolved in one of two ways- either new foster and adopters will come forward ASAP or healthy, innocent pigeons like Alaska and Eclipse (who have become a couple through the bars of their shelter cage) will be killed because they are timed out (weeks past their allotted time) and unadopted.

Please read the full post here.
